The Legend of the Green Dog

Legend has it that in the 17th century an architect was commissioned to build a bridge and a lock in the valley of the Senne, between the gates of Flanders and Ninove, at a place called the "Green Dog". But the ground was so shifty and marshy that, despite all the ingenuity of the architect, the work had to be stopped. Everything he owned was lost in the process.

The architect then made a pact with the Devil: in exchange for half a million guilders, the architect agreed that in ten years the Devil would return to take him away. The ten years passed quickly and on the fatal evening when the Devil was to come and take him away, the architect organised a meal, one of whose guests was none other than the canon of Saint Gudula, Jan Van Nuffel.

The Devil appeared, holding in his hand the pact signed by the architect, and said simply: "I am coming to take you". The old canon intervened and said: "Be so kind, Mr. Beelzebub, as to give my friend a little respite, while you count the grains of millet in this glass". What the Devil did not know was that the grains had been dipped in holy water. As soon as Beelzebub touched the blessed grains, he let out a loud cry of pain before fleeing, in the form of a green dog, towards the neighbourhood where our room is located.
